Question 1

Are online betting sites legal in Australia?

Accepted Answer

Yes, online sports betting is legal in Australia for licensed operators. The Interactive Gambling Act 2001 governs online gambling in the country. Licensed bookmakers operating under Australian state and territory licences — most commonly through the Northern Territory Racing Commission — are fully legal and regulated. However, the Act prohibits unlicensed offshore operators from actively targeting Australian residents. Always choose a licensed, regulated platform from our list of recommended betting sites to ensure your funds are protected and you have legal recourse if needed.

Question 2

What is the minimum age to use betting sites in Australia?

Accepted Answer

You must be 18 years of age or older to open an account and wager at any Australian betting site. This is a strict legal requirement under all state and territory gambling legislation. Operators are required to verify the age and identity of all customers, and accounts found to belong to underage individuals will be immediately closed and any funds returned. If you are under 18, please do not attempt to register at any of the betting sites listed in this guide.

Question 3

Can I use a credit card to deposit at Australian betting sites?

Accepted Answer

No. Since 2017, Australian banks have been prohibited from processing credit card transactions to online gambling merchants. As a result, virtually all licensed Australian betting sites do not accept credit card deposits. The good news is there are plenty of great alternatives: debit cards including Visa and Mastercard, POLi, BPAY, direct bank transfer, and e-wallets like PayPal where supported are all widely available across the top betting sites. These options are free of charge at most operators and often offer instant deposit processing for a seamless experience.

Question 4

How do bonus bets work at Australian betting sites?

Accepted Answer

Bonus bets work differently from real-money bets in one important way: only the winnings are paid out, not the original stake. For example, if you place a $100 bonus bet at odds of $2.50 and it wins, you receive $150 in profit, not $250 including the stake. Bonus bets at reputable betting sites typically have a minimum odds requirement — usually between $1.50 and $2.00 — an expiry period of seven to thirty days, and cannot be split across multiple bets unless the terms specifically allow it. Always read the full terms and conditions of any bonus offer before opting in.

Question 5

What is BetStop and how does it affect betting sites in Australia?

Accepted Answer

BetStop is Australia's National Self-Exclusion Register, launched in 2023. It allows individuals to exclude themselves from all licensed Australian wagering services in a single step — rather than having to contact each of the betting sites separately. Once registered with BetStop, all licensed operators are legally required to close your account and prevent you from opening new ones across any of their platforms. You can choose an exclusion period from three months up to lifetime. BetStop is free to use and managed by the Australian Communications and Media Authority. To register, visit betstop.gov.au.

Question 6

How long do withdrawals take at Australian betting sites?

Accepted Answer

Withdrawal processing times at Australian betting sites depend on two factors: how quickly the operator processes the request — usually within 24 hours for fully verified accounts — and how long your bank or payment method takes to transfer the funds. Bank transfers typically take one to three business days once processed by the operator. Debit card refunds via Visa or Mastercard usually take two to five business days. E-wallets like PayPal, where available across select betting sites, are generally the fastest option at 24 to 48 hours. Ensure your account is fully verified before making your first withdrawal request to avoid unnecessary delays.
